The Papin Sisters (Murderous Maids).

In the 1930s France, Christine and Lea Papin had a bond that no mother could break.

Back to the 1920s - 16 year old Christine and her little sister Lea had an unusual upbringing. Their mother had abandoned them to an orphanage whilst she enjoyed a life free of responsibilities - to her, her daughters could do nothing right - and even frequently insulted the girls on their appearance during visits. Her daughters were just assets and soon she forced Christine to go into work as a maid. 6 years later - Christine had a good reputation and started working for the Lancelin family (extremely wealthy family). Due to the such a close bond both Christine and Lea had - Christine asked her new employer if Lea could also start working at the home as a maid. (She soon agreed to let little Lea work as a maid with Christine). Madame Lancelin’s domineering ways irritated the Papin sisters. They were both subjected to constant verbal abuse. The sisters only source of comfort was each other and their awakening sexuality.

One night Madame Lancelin discovered their incestual behaviour and tentions would soon boil over. Madame Lancelin used this as a remark in an argument with the girls in front of her daughter the next day and Christine retaliated due to embarrassment and anger with violence whilst Lea looked on and then began to join in. The Papin sisters tore out the eyes of Madame Lancelin and her daughter before stabbing them and beating them continuously with a knife and a hammer. That same evening - Monsieur Lancelin came home from work and was angry at why he had been locked out so he then decided to call the police out of fury. When they arrived - Monsieur Lancelin and three police officers barged their way in and there they discovered the bodies of his wife, Madame Lancelin and his daughter on the landing. The original hypothesis was that there was a killer on the loose and that officers and Monsieur Lancelin were going to find the Papin sisters both killed too. However what they found instead was the sisters huddled up together in bed in their underwear.

They made no attempt at all to cover up their crime and admitted to the brutal double murder straight away.

In 1933 Christine was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death by guillotine. Her sentence was later commuted by the president to hard labour for life in prison. Christine’s health quickly began to decline. She refused to eat, and was unable to take care of herself. In a public asylum in Rennes, Christine died in 1937 of Cachexia - (a wasting disease from self-inflicted malnutrition).

Lea was sentenced to 10 years hard labour in prison but was then released in 1943 after serving eight years. She went on to live with the mother who abandoned her and continued work as a maid in Nantes - fifty miles away under the new name “Marie”.

Brilliant read, quite a sad case though. Their mother abandoning them then insulting and being domineering with them, no wonder they blew their fuse.
