horrible

The young man in this photo, which was taken around 1874, sought treatment for the bone cancer in his left arm only after it had become extremely painful.

That wasn't especially uncommon in the 1800s, as surgery then was very dangerous - and cancer treatment haphazard.

Surgeons knew they had to remove lots of tissue to have any chance of curing the patient, and infection following surgery was common.

This man died not long after surgery.

Surprised the doctors didn't think of amputation long before it ever got that point, unless he didn't admit himself to the hospital until in the last stages of his life ?
