More Vintage Corset Photos
There are lots of excellent pictures at this site. Some of my favourites: Actress Camille Clifford: http://www.staylace.com/gallery/gall...ord/index.html She's wearing an Edwardian (also called an s-curve or flat-front) corset that simultaneously narrows the waist while pushing the chest up and forward and the hips back. Lillian Russell http://www.staylace.com/gallery/gall...ell/index.html Lillie Langtry, also known as "Jersey Lily" http://www.staylace.com/gallery/gall...gry/index.html |

It can cause a lot of damage if you aren't careful-I have an old medical book from the 1850's that warns of the dangers of tightly laced corsets. Most of these women would have literally grown up wearing a corset so that would make a difference. |

Those are some beautiful corsets. I personally love wearing corsets, they're really great for correcting posture, plus they help with my back pain. That being said, some people did and still do take it to the extreme. |

Re: More Vintage Corset Photos
That's a good point-I'm not sure how much is the corset actually holding the body in and how much is the body adjusting to the corset. I have read that serious tight-lacers wear a corset 23 hours out of every 24 so I imagine the body would revert back otherwise.

I'm glad you liked them! My understanding is that a custom made corset which is laced moderately is very comfortable and supportive, just as you describe. The extremely tight ones are the ones that cause problems. |

Re: More Vintage Corset Photos
My grandmother was a tight lacer when she was pregnant with her first child. Due to the limited amount of space given for my aunt to grow, she was born at 28 weeks, and almost half the size of a premie born around that stage. We have no history of dwarfism in our family, and my aunt legally a midget. She's not a dwarf, she's perfectly per-portioned, she's just very tiny. She also has a lot of medical issues due to her size. Though she was healthy, her bone density, and even muscle strength, has always been significantly reduced since birth. Her doctors say because of the very limited amount of space in the womb, my grandmother's own body induced labor because it wouldn't have been able to hold my aunt to full term. She now suffers from severe physical problems. After my aunt was born, my grandmother stopped tight-lacing and gave birth to 7 more children, all 10lbs-13lbs. |
