You are in Europe I see. There have always been conquests and conquerors, and will be as long as humans remain on the earth. Sometimes they simply want to expand their power and their territories, and have no particular animosity toward the peoples they are conquering. So long as the conquered peoples cooperate with the government and don't rebel, they are treated reasonably decently. Thus, for example, peoples who were formerly part of the Hapsburg Empire typically don't have any particular hatred for present day Austrians. In other cases, however, the rulers regard the conquered people as inferior human beings, suitable only to be exploited as the tools or outright slaves of the conquerors. Thus they treat them with contempt and subject them to all sorts of abuses. When these people finally throw them out, perhaps after centuries, they may pay that animosity and contempt back as they find the opportunities to do so. Thus members of the original conquerors' ethnic or religious denominations still living in the formerly dominated lands can easily become victims.

These things are not forgotten in the nations where they occurred.
