My mother lost twin brother and sister from what they called consumption. They were 3 months old.

Most likely cholera or other infectious disease that makes eating and drinking difficult, such as diphtheria. The boy is seriously dehydrated and malnutritioned.

There was also bad adulterated food, borax was routinely added to milk that had soured, plus the ersatz baby bottles available could not be adequately cleaned. They called themmurder bottles. I researched and did a paper on this in college. That soured milk lurking in the bottle nipples and in the milk itself carried a bovine form of TB that transferred easily to these poor kids. There were no vaccines or antibiotics in this era. Many children died.
