Re: Kidnapped Girl Found In Man's Basement (London, 1957)
The dungeon looks like a WWII bomb shelter (Lewis Shelter?) You would dig a hole, then line it with corrugated steel sheet that was bolted together, then fill it in with dirt. The government supplied the corrugated steel. The home-owner had to dig the hole. The walls are what tipped me off to that. There must still be a LOT of these in the London area. Most of them did not have a stove. |

That would be an "Anderson Shelter", would it not? My parents had one in their back garden, in County Durham.

We couldn't afford to live in a place like that. My family lived in a wet cardboard box, behind the bus shelter.

Re: Kidnapped Girl Found In Man's Basement (London, 1957)
Albie, you are correct. I was confused. (I think Lewis is the guy who made the bombs you dropped ON the shelter!) Anyway, you were lucky! My family used to DREAM of living in a wet cardboard box! We lived in a gravel ditch, all 12 of us. And we worked down at the mill, 27 hours a day. And it was uphill both ways! And all we had for food was old moss and rainwater! But we were happy, even being so poor. It built our character, not like today, where everyone has a t.v. Ahhhhh! Those were the good old days!* *With thanks to Monty Python |
