During the search, the diggers also discovered the bodies of the Swiss guards, who were killed during the French revolution. They put them back. They excavated from shafts they dug at different areas of the property, so as not to disturb the landowner's structures. They then tunneled along preset courses until they discovered the metal coffin. There is an excellent book on the entire search.
