The five murders usually attributed to "Jack the Ripper" occurred between September and November 1888 in London's East End, "a den of poverty and drink," specifically in the Whitechapel area, a district of 62 brothels and 1,200 prostitutes. All of the victims were prostitutes, and all (except for 25-year-old Mary Jane Kelly) were between the ages of 43 and 46.
