Re: Iron Lungs

Being trapped in a enclosed case would scare the living shit out of me. If I go to get on a roller coaster, the only thing that scares me is when they pull the bar/strap over you and you can't move... I think I'd be screwed back in those days.
Yeah, they actually remind me of the Japanese hotel sleeping pods.

I'd book a pod for the night.

Claustrophilia, that's hilarious. I would totally do it, too. The iron lung is about as bad as an MRI, I would think.

Re: Iron Lungs

If I'm not mistaken that photo was taken at Rancho Los Amigos Regional Rehabilitation Hospital in Downey, CA (it's world famous for rehabilitation and research of paraplegic injuries). I grew up near that place...it was where most, if not all, of the really severe polio patients were sent their for rehabilitation...in fact, a few polio patients still go there for regular rehabilitation. When I was a kid, we would tour Rancho and perform community service activities at the hospital. When I was young, there still one or two folks in the iron lungs. What an awful awful existence. I had several friends growing up whose mothers or fathers had lingering effects of the polio outbreak from the late 1940's...what a horrific disease. Too bad there are idiot moms out there who refuse to vaccinate their children. Perhaps if they had the opportunity that I did, and actually talk to someone in an iron lung, they'd quit fucking around and vaccinate the crap outta their kids.
If I could have ''thanked'' twice I would have. Some folks spent decades in those things and today most don't even know what they are. Yes, vaccinate

when i was born they didnt give me the shot for polio.... my dad, i was told got mad, but anyway i didnt get it.... a few years ago i was told i either have polio or als.. it was do to the fact that one calf muscle died on me.. so for two years i was sent to tests and etc etc... finally they told me to just stop smoking and to ride a bike.(can u belive that shit). and they have no clue why my calf died in one leg..... anyway for those two years i was preparing to die, living in fear, making a will etc and hanging with polio and als patience... all i can say is WE NEED TO FIND A CURE FOR SUCH A HORRIFIC and dreaded way to die....when i was told i didnt have it, i didnt feel good.. i felt horrible. i felt guilty.. i got saved..... the poor fucks r still sittin in the waiting rooms..... horrible..... sad.....

no they are nothing like an MRI in the sense that ur still connected to ur body and they lived in the iron lung for long long periods of time. The Iron Lung was pressurized and controlled ur bellow the neck and would decide how to make u take each breath... nothing like an mri
