Because the Soviet government cut off Ukraine from everywhere else; the government issued "internal passports" to prevent people from leaving. Anyone who tried to escape the famine was caught and sent back to the countryside to a certain death from starvation. It was a systematic, engineered famine to prevent the rise of "Ukrainian nationalism". Sounds almost like Putin today doesnt it?

This explains a little more about how people were discouraged from moving around to search for food; "In the spring of 1933 one third of the people in the village were starving.The others had a little food and ate once a day to keep from swelling. To save themselves and their families from starvation, men began to offer their properties for sale or in exchange for food. Some went to Kharkiv, Kiev or Poltava (major cities of Ukraine) to buy a little food and came back disappointed. Those cities were no better than Hadyach. Then they went to Moscow, Stalingrad, Voronezh and Orel (cities in Russia) where food could be obtained. But the GPU soon found this out and the people were searched on the trains, food confiscated, and they themselves were charged with speculation. Another heart-wrenching account: can any of the parents on here imagine being in this situation? beyond comprehension  "The plight of children during the famine was particularly pathetic. A foreign observer writes: "It was beyond my comprehension... at Kharkiv I saw a boy, wasted to a skeleton, lying in the middle of the street. A second boy was sitting near a keg of garbage picking egg-shells out of it. They were looking for edible remnants of food or fruit. They perished like wild beasts... The Soviets didnt even admit the famine until the late 1980s early 1990s under Gorbachev. Prior to Gorby, the famine was flatly denied by the Soviet government, and in the USSR itself, it was illegal to even mention the famine.

Where there's trash, there's scavengers. There had to be rodents and such feeding off the garbage. I'd be eating those.  If I were homeless in the city, i'd roast pigeon and rats. Gotta be better than living off booze and the dollar menu.  |

Yeah I remember reading that too. I believe it; a LOT of people had relatives who died in that horrendous, deliberate famine |
