Hanging of Spies

Hanging of spies the austrian way (WW1). The person in the middle is a woman.

The whole setup is a bit primitive (to say the least). And their faces are covered after the hanging, not before.

Why the cross member on the pole? It almost looks like a crucifix.
I'm not sure. The method is called "polehanging" and was used for executions in the old doublemonarchy of Austria-Hungary (and maybe also later - I'm not sure).

The crossbeam isn't nescessary, but I guess it's there so it is easier to fasten the rope. But I'm almost sure that I've seen pics of poles without it.
