Re: Funeral Home, 1899
This guy was an undertaker and not necessarly a funeral home. In those days most of these guys just prepared the body and furnished a casket and transportation. The body would be returned back to the home where a family member would stay with it. Undertakers would also provide chairs, a bier and anything else necessary for a funeral at a home or church. The idea of offering a one stop shop complete with reposing rooms and a chappel didn't come until later Funeral Homes. When motor vehicles became common, the undertaker or funeral home was most likely the owner of the town's ambulance service as well, often with a dual use, convertable hearse that turned into an ambulance.
