Re: Finnish Photos from WW2 [prev. Unreleased]
It is told that the Russian commanding general remarked that they had gained enough ground to bury their 1,000,000 dead .Not a very reasonable ratio...but then what is? One man,Simo Hayha shot 500 Russians dead. He was a sniper. The Finn fighters were largely shopkeepers, farmers, mechanics etc. standing between the Russian bear and their families. |

Re: Finnish Photos from WW2 [prev. Unreleased]
The only thing the Russians had going for them was sheer numbers. But the Finns were expert at winter warfare, and knew the topography of their country well. The Russians, on the other hand, suffered from a rigid command structure and unfamiliarity with maneuvering in dense, snow-blanketed forests. As a result, the Finns simply slapped the snot out of them during the first months. Finnish ski troops would swoop in on a Russian column, shoot the hell out of it, and disappear before the enemy could react. The brief "Winter War" ended in 1940, with Finland ceding land to the Soviets. But the Russians chose -- probably wisely -- not to attempt an occupation of the little country. Total casualties (in less than one year): Finland, 70.000; Russia 323,000.

They probaply got killed in bombings. The breed is Finnish horse and is highly appreciated for efforts beside all Finnish men and women in war. There are about 60 000 veterans alive today. Average age is around 90 yrs. So soon they all are history. |

Re: Finnish Photos from WW2 [prev. Unreleased]
The Finns were considered such valuable allies to the Nazis that they actually let them skirt around the issue of deporting Finnish Jews. A decent number of Finnish Jews died fighting on the side of the Nazis, a group of people who would have very gladly seen them gassed.

Actually skinning someone for your own amusement is kinda hard i'd guess. Moreover the official caption gives exact place and timing for this picture. Dates and locations match with a known anti-partisan operations made on finnish soil. Also note that anti-partisan warfare in finnish - russian wars were alot different that similiar operations carried by nazis on Belarus. Partisans up here were not local peasants, but CPSU members with objectives to carry out sabotage and terror missions on the civilian population. Many times these groups were malnourished and cut off from supplies. So |
