A World War I soldier receives some facial reconstruction surgery in 1920. I think they did a pretty decent job considering era in which it was done.

According to the documents, the man was hit by a bullet in the face, that's what caused the deformity in the first place.

This must be the technique whereby living flesh parts from elsewhere on the man's body are grafted to the damaged area. Slowly-- and this series literally had to be photographed over nearly a two-year period, at least--- the healthy flesh becomes "new" facial tissue, which presumably is later excised?

That technique sure beats the hell out of using a custom facial prosthetic that was much more common during and after WWI. Given the time period it truly is an amazing example of plastic surgery...I'm not sure they could do that much better today.

Wow that is damned impressive.
It appears he has aged ten years during the lapse in the photos. The docs were commited to get him just right no matter the time it would take.
