It appears that one of the shooters was assigned the head shot, while the rest aimed for the body.

Because he was executed both as a traitor and co-organiser of the Ardeatine massacre according to the art. 8-29 of the italian War Penal Code. Many others were shot in the chest, but traitors and responsible for war crimes were shot in the back.
