In Spain it was called garrote vil. Most of the pics are from Spain, but three is the Philippines, (that pic must be after 1898 because those are Americans). The last one looks like Cuba. The worst was the spiked garrote  , but the modern garrote was quite humane and caused a quick death. The spinal chord was severed long before the victim was strangled.

Wasn't there one of these in the James Bond movie Occtopussy. I thought there was a piece that pushed in from the back and broke your neck. But if these devices just caused slow strangulation that would really suck. But, then again being killed would just plain suck.
