Agreed. Creepy for sure, but i suppose that was accepted in those times. Its important to place a reference frame, and its kinda cool to trend the mentality shift too.

As a memento mori fanatic, I'm impressed to see some pictures I've never seen. I don't think the two where the children are wide-eyed and open-mouthed are real, though. Those kids look very much alive, and the eyes don't appear to be painted on, especially the kid on the horse. Nonetheless, creepy.
