Yeah, this wasn't a 'deformity'. I've seen this in several WW1 injury Galleries, and the man recieved trauma to the face causing loss of most of his lower jaw. The 'tentacle' looking things are actually done by the doctors... it's a method of getting healthy blood flow to and away from areas of significant trauma. They would take large junks or 'grafts' from the patients hip or thigh and use it as elsewhere on the body as a 'bridge'.
