Early Nose Reconstruction Method
The first nose reconstruction surgeries began in Italy in the 1600s. Known as the Tagliacozzi Method, these procedures were still used up until 1959. A flap of skin was cut from the upper arm and sewn to the area of lost nose. The arm was immobilized until the arm skin grafted onto the face. Then, the flap was cut free from the arm and shaped over a metal form shaped like a nose. The flap was sewn over the metal form, creating a new nose. The image is from 1944, a soldier with disfiguring facial injuries.
