The Death of Jasmin Correa *Child Warning*
I put this in here because it's black and white and from 1983. As much as I don't want to call 1983 "vintage", I think it technically is. Photo: A medical technician carries infant Jasmin Correa to an ambulance as her father Joaquin Correa, (who was charged with her death) and mother Marisol follow. The Correa family, nineteen year old parents and their three children lived in a single room at a New York welfare hotel. On November 23, 1983, the crying of the youngest child, 25 day old Jasmin, provoked the anger of her father, who was trying to sleep. Her mother took her into the bathroom, quieted her and then returned and placed her on the kind sized bed. When Jasmin began crying again, Joaquin hit her twice. Frightened, the parents called the police with an invented story; when the emergency rescue officials arrived, it was already too late. News article: THE CITY; Infant Is Slain; Father, 19, Held Published November 23, 1983 A 25-day-old child was beaten to death last night at the Carter Hotel, and her father was arrested and charged with the slaying, according to the police. When police officers went to the hotel, 250 West 43d Street, at 9 P.M. last night in response to a call, they found the child, Jasmin Correa, with bruises on her forehead. She was taken to Roosevelt Hospital and was pronounced dead there at 10:15 P.M. The child's father, Jack Joaquin Correa, 19 years old, who lived at the Carter Hotel, was charged with child abuse and murder. The mother, Marisol Correa, 19, who also lived at the hotel, was not charged. The couple's other children, ages 3 and 1, were taken to Roosevelt Hospital for observation and later released in custody of the police, a hospital spokesman said. I have researched, but cannot locate anymore information on the mother or father. I was 18 when this happened, which makes them one year older than I am. My biggest concern that November was how was I going to spend my upcoming Christmas Break from college. I can't imagine how their lives went so wrong that at 19, they ended up with three kids, living in a homeless hotel and had one dead 25 day old baby. |
