The pointed sticks were implaced to protect against enemy invasion of their trench. Big group of scared men running through an open area, trying to find the entrance to the trench (only shelter/cover). I read a book about Ww1 trenches which stated germany would lean there dead men against these stick in hope an enemy would try and tackle the presummed alive and well defender. |

these photos were taken in 1865 during the siege of petersburg and are dead rebels. The end of the war closely resembled the trench warfare that emerged during WWI
