Ahhh, memento mori. Fascinating stuff. I come from a country (Australia) where open casket funerals are fairly rare, and this practice reminds me of an open casket - a loved one dressed up for a chance to say goodbye.

Back in those times photography was a luxury many people couldnt afford but maybe once or twice in their/their family life so many times this was there only chance and they had to take it or loose it forevI understand not wanting the only picture of the person you love to look like theyre dead. So why not pose together at the table or on a chair for a few minutes for something that'll last a life time?? :)er.:

This is a fallacy- People didn't get propped up like that and made to look alive. The wooden props were used to make someone stay still because the process of picture taking was so slow if they moved at all it blurred. Thats why people didn't smile in Victorian pics because the smile was too hard to hold.
