I think the damage on that boy's face may be postmortem animal bites. Rats and other critters will eat corpses and they tend to go for the soft parts first, like eyeballs, lips, etc.

The injuries to the head and face are postmortum...notice there is no active bleeding...he looks like he starved to death and the animals went after him |
