In the book "The Nun's Story" that was made into an Audrey Hepburn film, the nun is sent to work in a mental hospital where the patients have this treatment and she says that the noise of them drumming their heels on the bottom of the baths was deafening.

I watched that movie when I was young and I distinctly remember that scene with all the screaming, like they were being tortured or something.
