How do you figure? We nuked them because if we had invaded, even the women and children would've fought like men. Then there's the human wave charges, the kamikaze tactics...that all seems pretty manly to me.

I don't think they had to be vaporized for that to happen. The shadows result from the person obscuring the heat from the blast as it scorches the side of the building. Since the person is blocking said heat, the unscorched part of the building conforms to the outline of their body.
