Actually, the third darkest chapter in the world history. Fascism might have claimed a lot of innocent victims, but it's no where near in comparisson to what the communist's did. The darkest chapter in history would be the genocide commited under Mao Tsedong (~100 million killed), the second darkest would be Stalin's era (~60 million killed), and the third would be the nazi holocaust (~6 million killed).

everybody who denys that the holocaust happened should visit those places of extermination. i live in austria and as you know there are a few kz around like mauthausen. if you ever saw one of those sites, even today without the death, hate and violence, you still have a horrible feeling in your guts when you walk into the barracks, with tiny wodden beds or the infamous showers, where hundreds were enslaved and killed. you even can see scratchmarks in the walls were so many had to die.

that visit changed the way i see life.

There was also the Armenian genocide.

I think the Holocaust is so heavily talked about and is the epitome of example for genocide is because the Nazis were such meticulous record keepers. They documented and recorded everything. As a Jew, I'm horrified by the atrocities, but I'm also awed by the systematic organization they took to everything they did.

The only reason they lasted as long as they did was because no one believed that anyone would possibly do anything this horrendous. And people who lived close to where the death camps were, they were afraid of doing anything because they'd be immediately shot.

My great aunt's friend was a survivor, she was never in a death camp, but she was forced in a 350 mile death march. She married her American liberator and won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.

You are not a typical Austrian who claims Mozart is austrian but says Hitler was german.

A Hitler close relative took a genetic test, it revealed Hitler had some African blood in him. There was always talk of Hitler's possible jewish blood.

Small correction - the Nazi crimes are pretty well tied with Stalin's decades long purges, if not pushed to second - Stalin killed more people, over a longer period of time...and got away with it...no one came close to suspecting the scale of the atrocities commited by his orders until long after his death, and many historians are convinced that the real toll was far greater than we know of now...

I would also count the destruction of the meso-american peoples by Europeans and their diseases as another front runner for the title of worst collective crime in history, but that's a much more complicated debate than I can put into a single post, so I'll just leave it at that...

As far as intolerance and hate goes, it is an unfortunate fact that humans are a tribal species, hardwired to think in terms of us and them, and in addition our brains automatically catagorize things in our lives to allow for fast assesments of risks etc...so we will always judge people by what groups they come from...it's what we do with those impressions that makes us who we are...

seems like a poor justification of what happen, pointing to another wrong will never work, like saying my dad beat thats why I beat my child I should be judge for the fact I beat my child

Yup. It's well documented that Hitler was inspired by the Armenian genocide perpetrated by the Turks. Too bad that tragedy is known as the forgotten and often denied genocide.

The germans were the first to have the mechanized ability to kill on a mega level... Gengic Khan and a multitde of other world leaders would have done and did do death to the very extent of their abilities for the times they lived in. Just sayin'
