Well, seeing as how the pictures are few centuries old, it's most likely they died from diseases.

I find this kinda strange and cool. Before people had photograhpy they use to have their dead loved ones portrate painted or scetched after death. On most cases that was the only picture they had of that person. After modern photography came on the scene they found it was cheaper to pay for a photo than a painting. I think it sort of faded out when cameras became cheap enough for everyone to own one and take pictures of your loved ones while they are alive!
