Back then (mid-1800s to about mid-1900s), couples often slept in separate rooms/beds, as it was thought "unhealthy" to share a bed due to being able to transmit germs/illness. It was also a sign of wealth, if you could afford to each have a separate bedroom. Probably not blocked but I'm assuming the door was locked for modesty/security (lol), and he likely was asleep and didn't wake up right away? |
