Pics 9 & 10 are of four of the Lincoln assassination conspirators being hanged. Apart from the obvious notoriety, it was notable because the victim on the far left, Mary Surratt, was the first woman to be judicially hanged in the US. Next one along is Lewis Powell. Both of them died hard, struggling for five minutes. The other two had their necks broken, so had an easy ride. Not worth its own post, but here is pic of Powell that could belong in a gallery...or depending on your taste in other publications... There are two versions of when this was taken: just before execution or just after arrest. I think it's posed sometime after his arrest. Still looks calm and defiant though. |

The collection of conspirator's portraits from Lincoln's death are absolutely shocking. The most amazing B+W pictures I have seen. I didn't include them because of the lack of gore though. No doubt my absolute favorite Black and Whites. Here are a few... |
