I was wondering why he was not tied up and blindfolded. I think someone who was in this situation with hands and feet not bound would probably try and claw at the executioner in one last failed attempt to stop.

Properly done, with a fast tightening of the noose, should be as fast and relatively painless as a well done hanging. Unfortunately, a slow tightening would result in a choking death from breathing being blocked....
