Re: American Lynching

Well I'm not saying all black people are criminals and should be locked up. I'm just saying I get tired of hearing about how they are somehow effected by something that happened way before their time.

There is a reason there is BET, all black colleges, the ***** fund, black people meet dating site, etc. But somehow that bullshit isn't racist.
Slavery and lynching is not so far in the past that blacks today are not affected. It doesn't seem like you understand that although blacks worked their asses off to help build this country, they received no compensation for their labor. They had NOTHING to pass down to their children so each generation lived in poverty. There is also mental barriers that exist due to a lack of identity. Many young blacks today do not feel as though they have any history because 90% of what they're taught in school is European history. They might see a chapter or two on Martin Luther King Jr, but not much beyond that.

First of all BET is white owned (Viacom) and it hasn't been a positive channel for black people in a long time. BET used to have programming that encouraged black youth to get educated and they had forums to discuss important topics. BET today shows nothing but worthless programming. If you're white, when you turn on the TV most of the programming is for YOU by default. The news and even most movies are already biased towards you. That's why programming and channels for minorities have to exist. You may have never given any thought to the fact that maybe minorities don't want to watch something like Sienfield or fantasy shows that depict 99% white characters (Game of Thrones).

How is it racist to have grants to encourage black to go to college and black colleges? How welcome do you think young black youth are made to feel in a predominately white school? Can you honestly say they're greeted with open arms and will experience no racism? Black colleges are an option for minorities to get an education in a different environment.

Say what you will, but I disagree completely. There is no good reason (in MY opinion) why black colleges should exist and all whit colleges don't. If you ask me, I find it all racist against all other races that don't have special treatment. It's funny to me how people just turn a blind eye to this shit. But hey, that's only my opinion.

So in your eyes there should be no black colleges so that the only options for blacks to seek an education are schools where they are not very welcome. Schools filled with students they may not even relate to. That's what you see as "fair" because there are are no colleges specifically labeled as a "white" college even though they ARE a majority white college (they don't need label it).

For some reason if you were choosing a college, I seriously doubt you'd elect one where you were surrounded by minorities or people you don't relate to. You'd probably choose a college where you felt most comfortable. Strange that you think others are wrong for wanting the same thing.

I think as a people we need to have more empathy.

Actually, I dated a girl who was white and went to Howard University a long time ago (Jesus, I must be getting old if I am saying 1997 was a long time ago). But, obviously she was the exception to the norm.

I had a very lengthy conversation thread with a black girl on youtube awhile back who basically said the same things you commented on. What struck me was your comment about, and I am paraphrasing here, "a lack of identity" in the black community. As time has gone along, I am getting more of a sense just how critical of an impact this has had on the community as a whole, and its consequenses cannot be understated.

I got a chuckle while reading your comment about BET. One of my coworkers absolutely abhores that channel and I can picture his reaction to any mention of that channel.

Having that conversation thread was an exremely rare opportunity for me to engage in an open, honest dialogue without the politically correct constraints that I believe continue to hinder progress towards better relations between our respective communities. People need to stop walking on eggshells around each other, but instead need to take accountability for what they do and be honest in what they say. So let me ask this.

Would you say that having all black institutions could in any way reinforce a social divide as opposed to mending it?

What are your opinions of the leadership in the black community today such as al sharpton, jesse jackson, etc.?

Re: American Lynching

I don't see how black institutions are offering blacks anything that's not available to whites. Any white person who wants to attend a predominately white university will not have a hard time finding one. I think as a society we should be working towards not needing institutions that cater to a specific race, but at present time if a black colleges can motivate black youth to seek an education then I think they're needed.

I can't really comment on Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. I don't really follow them very closely.

That is a thought provoking perspective, thanks!

All I was trying to say is that black people get special treatment that others don't. A black college will not allow any other race to join. But if there was a college only for white people, it would be an outrage and racist. You're clearly not understanding where I'm coming from and it's very pointless to continue arguing. Have a good one and see ya later.
