3 Princeton Sophomores Pose After a Brutal, Rock-laced Snowball Fight, 1893
In this unhappy photograph from 1893, three members of Princeton’s class of 1895 show off their battered faces after participating in the erstwhile tradition of a yearly freshman/sophomore snowball fight…  The freshman-sophomore snowball fight of 1892-93 left Darwin R. James, John P. Poe, and Arthur L. Wheeler of the Class of 1895 looking like disconsolate pugilists. Did they sit for this portrait to bear witness to their bravery in battle or to protest the practice of filling snowballs with rocks? No one knows now. Their appearance serves as some evidence that the teams’ snowball recipe may have included some slightly less benign ingredients than the pure, fresh-fallen snow. I couldn’t find the story of this particular fight, but here’s how the New York Times recounted the previous year’s showdown on January 13, 1892…  |
