A Young Man is Killed Every Hour in Brazil
According to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the number of murders of young adolescents in Brazil rose from about three in 1990 to more than 24 a day last year. "See that the country has made a major change in the protection of children's lives, but failed to protect adolescents, especially blacks and those living in poor communities," said the coordinator of the Citizenship Program of UNICEF Teens, Mario Volpi. A similar situation is observed in relation to the education of children and adolescents. After the effective date of the ECA, the percentage of children enrolled in primary school jumped from 80% to over 98%, according to the Ministry of Education, compiled by UNICEF. In high school, however, about 50% of adolescents between 15 and 17 are not in school bank. |
