(AUS) A four-month-old baby girl was dead for about a week in a Brooklyn Park unit before her parents alerted authorities, police have revealed.

The man, 19, and woman, 17, were arrested when police and ambulance officers were called to the unit last night by Families SA.

Superintendent Tom Rieniets said the parents, both from NSW, reported the death to FamiliesSA at around 2.10pm yesterday, which then contacted police.

"The child was subsequently found in the house and confirmed deceased," he said.

"The child had been dead approximately a week."

Supt Reiniets said there was no clear indication as to the cause of death and a postmortem may not have any results until tomorrow.

"It's a tragedy, no one likes to see a four-month-old child die," he said.

"From our point of view we need to find out why and certainly the reasons as to what the cause of the death is."

The parents appeared in court charged with failing to report the death of the four-month-old child to police.

The female appeared in the Youth Court this afternoon.

She was barely visible over the edge of the court dock, with only her eyebrows and the top of her head showing.

Her lawyers asked the court to order a bail inquiry report, and she was remanded in custody until next week.

The man, 19, faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court a short time later.

He entered court handcuffed and teary, and began to cry when he sat down in the dock.

Magistrate Bob Harrap adjourned the matter for 20 minutes to allow the man time to compose himself and speak with his lawyer.

Upon his return from the cells, the man's lawyer asked for bail reports to be ordered pending an application for release next week.

Senior Constable Trevor Orchard, prosecuting, said bail in any form was opposed.

"The address that this man proposed for bail is currently being investigated in regard to the circumstances leading up to the death of the child," he said.

"We are opposed to bail on the grounds this man poses a flight risk... he has only been residing in this state since January 2011."

Mr Harrap agreed to order the report and remanded the man in custody until next week.
