Possibly in this case they weren't worried about 'being suddenly legally responsible for someone you try to help', as I've read is the case in China, because the driver was (literally) toast by the time they walked up?

When the smoke fills the cabin and the adrenaline starts pumping, drunk or not, you can lose the ability to think critically. Panic sets in and the victims just claw mindlessly at their usual controls. Most people aren't folk like us that think of the what-ifs, they just get in the car / bus / boat / cinema / nightclub etc and when something goes wrong they attempt escape via the same method. |

Electrically actuated car door handles are a solution for a nonexistent problem; Overly complex and prone to failure for the sake of "progress".
