World's Oldest Woman Dies
The world's oldest woman has died just days short of her 115th birthday. Brazilian Maria Gomes Valentim passed away after suffering from multiple organ failure.  Incredibly, she outlived her husband Joao by 65 years after marrying in 1913. Her only son died at the age of 75 in the early 1990s. Maria — known as Grandma Quita — was "the first Brazilian super-centenarian to hold the title", according to Guinness World Records. She was born on July 9 1896 in the south-eastern town of Carangola and lived there all her life. She died yesterday at the age of 114 years and 347 days. Last month she claimed that not "meddling" in other people's lives had helped her to live so long. Her granddaughter Jane Ribeiro Moraes, 63, said: "She says she has lived long because she has always taken care of her own life - and not meddled in the lives of others." Maria also credited a healthy lifestyle including eating a bread roll every morning with coffee and fruit for her many years. She was officially awarded the world's oldest woman title in May after Guinness declared she was 48 days older than the previous holder Besse Cooper from Monroe, Georgia, US. Guinness said: "With Maria's passing, the title of oldest living person reverts back to American Besse Cooper, age 114 years 299 days."  Besse's son Sid Cooper said his mum was living in a retirement community and going well. He added: "She's gained some weight, she's eating real good. "Her memory is still really good. She remembers things from a long time ago and recognises people." |

All I can do is marvel at these people and what they've seen in their lifetime. The fruition of electricity. The change of dirt roads to pavement. Cars. World War I. President Teddy Roosevelt. Queen Victoria. She was alive when Wyatt Earp still lived. |
