World's Most Expensive Car Crash!
No less than eight Ferraris were involved in a supercar pileup that could very well be the most expensive in history, in car damage terms. A Lamborghini Diablo, a Nissan GT-R and three Mercs were involved in the bizarre smash on the Chugoku Expressway, south-west Japan, this weekend. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured, although ten people were taken to hospital with cuts and bruises. The car damage alone is estimated at around £2.5m (although reports vary), with a handful of Ferraris written off, including a 348, a 360 Modena, a 360 Challenge Stradale and an F430. A witness described the scene as "a gathering of narcissists," with the cavalcade of supercars heading towards Hiroshima on a rainy motorway. The accident happened at 10:15am and, according to reports, blame is already being pinned on a 60-year-old driver, who tried to overtake and lost control on the wet road. He then slammed into the barrier before rebounding through the central reservation and into oncoming traffic. The driver, who faces up to three months in jail and a 100,000-yen (£800) fine if prosecuted, started a chain reaction that led to the pack of exotica playing bumper cars. He has not yet been charged, although police are still investigating the crash. Video footage of the exotic carnage shows supercars strewn hundreds of yards up the motorway. A Toyota Prius was damaged too. RIP. I'm still waiting for those kind of cars to hit mine. I could use a whiplash here, a little sprain there and a well funded vacation. sigh.
