A 20-year-old Louisiana woman says three men "wearing white hoods or hats" set her on fire while she was exercising in a park.

A Louisiana woman found with burns over more than half her body has said she was set on fire in a racist attack.

The 20-year-old black woman told police three men also wrote the initials KKK - an apparent reference to the Ku Klux Klan - and a racial slur on her car.

Sharmeka Moffitt said the men doused her in a flammable liquid and set her alight in a park in Winnsboro, a town in Franklin Parish. She had already put out the flames when police found her on Sunday night.

Her family said she was attacked while exercising alone.

Sharmeka's mother Edna Moffitt told a news conference she was due to undergo surgery later.

"They want to take the dead skin off and place other skin there if they can," she said.

"I have no idea who did it ... I want them to pay for what they did to her."

Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Julie Lewis said in her emergency call, Ms Moffitt described her attackers as three men wearing white hoods or hats.

She later told a Winnsboro police officer who responded to the call that the men were wearing white hoodies. She was unable to say what race her attackers were.

The FBI is investigating the alleged attack as a possible hate crime.

Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said: "This is a horrific event for our community.

"It makes everyone uneasy. It is our hope that everyone stands together at this time, and follow the information that is gathered, follow the facts, follow the evidence and hopefully that will lead us to justice in this case."

Yes, now police say she made up the racist attack story, they've found her fingerprints on a lighter, as well as DNA evidence on a charcoal fluid lighter bottle near the scene: and they don't know why she did this to herself. At least it's kinda relieving, tho: now i hope that her medical cares won't be paid by taxpayers.

Officials: Burn victim Sharmeka Moffitt's claims false

WINNSBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana State Police investigators said DNA evidence on a charcoal fluid lighter bottle shows that Sharmeka Moffitt's burns were self-inflicted. They also found her fingerprints on a cigarette lighter.

State Police said she also wrote the letters "KKK" on her car. Police are not clear yet on a motive and don't know why she did this to herself. As far as charges go, police said after they finish their investigation, they will hand over their findings to the district attorney's office. The D.A. will determine whether or not Moffitt will face charges.

Throughout the investigation, The Franklin Parish Sheriff is asking the community to have compassion.

"I think we still, as a community, as we were when we felt it was an attack situation," Sheriff Kevin Cobb said. "Our community was coming together. They were coming together to support her from all sides and we should continue to do that."

The Moffitt family released a statement, saying "Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter's injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it's a resolution."

The family went on to thank everyone for their sincere support and prayers.

As for the sheriff, he said a lot of mis-information in the case came from social media. He's asking people who post online to distribute information responsibly.

WINNSBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Franklin Parish officials are reporting Sharmeka Moffitt's claims that she was attacked and set on fire are false.

KNOE's newspaper partner The Franklin Sun is reporting evidence from the State Police Crime Lab show Moffitt's fingerprints were on both the cigarette lighter and lighter fluid found near the scene at Civitan Park.

A press conference was held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to release more information on this matter.
