A woman has been found guilty of cooking a friend's ten-week-old kitten to death in a microwave in revenge for her boyfriend being reported to police.
Gina Robins, 31, asked to use the 770 watt device to heat some baby food but instead shut the animal inside and switched it on, Torbay magistrates found today.
The cat's owner Sarah Knutton, who is hard of hearing, was sitting in her lounge when she heard a 'loud popping noise followed by a hideous screech before discovering her scorched pet.



She was so horrified at the sight she immediately vomited in the kitchen sink.
The incident happened just five days after an altercation between the pair in which Ms Knutton had called the police on Robins' boyfriend, magistrates were told.
Robins later sent a text to Miss Knutton which read: 'Remember the saying 'what goes around comes around'? It has started already to bite you in the a***. The cat? Karma.'
Robins denied one count of causing unnecessary suffering to the black-and-white cat at Torbay Magistrates Court in Torquay, Devon.
She claimed that the microwave, which starts automatically when the door shuts, was accidentally turned on by one of the cats after the kitten got inside.
But magistrates in her home town of Torquay, Devon, found her evidence during her day-long trial 'far-fetched' and 'inconsistent'.
The court heard how the pair fell out when Miss Knutton called the police on February 11 because Robins' boyfriend Matt Taylor was shouting abuse outside her house in Torquay.
She then received a text message from Robins telling her she had 'made it worse'.
The court found Robins then returned to the house on February 15 under the pretence she wanted to heat some baby food for her 18-month-old son Oliver.
She returned to the lounge and seemed agitated before Miss Knutton made the grim discovery.
Miss Knutton told the court that Robins came round for a 'chat', adding: 'We spoke about what had happened and chatted generally.
'She was noticeable different and very jumpy and fidgety. I knew something was wrong but put it down to her relationship problems.
'It was after she had been in the house for about an hour I heard a loud bang like a bag of crisps popping.
'Then a hideous screech. It was horrible.
'At first Gina denied hearing anything, then offered to go and have a look.
'She came in with her head in her hands and told me to go and have a look myself.
'I thought something might have fallen on one of the kittens so looked on the floor but then I saw the microwave in the corner.
'I was sick then was in a state of shock. I felt numb.'
Iain O'Donnell, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said: 'It is our case that the defendant put the kitten in a microwave and cooked it to death.
'Whilst in the lounge Miss Knutton heard a "loud popping noise" in the kitchen and then a hideous screech.
'She was shocked by the sounds.
'Miss Knutton said she would go and have a look what it was but the defendant offered to go as she wanted to reheat the baby food.
'The defendant then ran back into the living room after about 20 seconds and said "Oh God. its horrible".
'When Miss Knutton went into the kitchen she saw the kitten lying in the microwave with the door open.
'She was physically sick in the kitchen sink. Robins then said the cats must have been fighting and shut themselves inside.'
In a statement read in court, vet Colin Cameron, who examined the kitten, said there was 'no doubt it would have suffered unnecessarily' before dying.
It read: 'The kitten's front paws were tucked under as if clenching before death and the claws were extended as if in a fight response.
'It's skin was also redder because of the heat form the microwave.'
Chairman of the bench Liz Klyne told Robins: 'We find it implausible that a kitten of 10 weeks of age could climb up on to a work surface and get into a microwave and then another cat closed the door.
'We find you deliberately placed the kitten in the microwave, which ultimately caused its death.'
She warned Robins that they would look at all options, including jail, when she is sentenced next month.
