Homicide investigators with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department are on the scene of a bizarre death in San Diego's East County.

Deputies say a man called 911 to report his wife may have been killed with a homemade cannon by accident.

Investigators along with U.S. Border Patrol agents responded to Potrero Valley Road around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two men were working on the cannon outside the home in the Twin Lakes Resort mobile home park when it fired, sending a projectile into the home.

It's not clear if the cannon was homemade or not according to Cal Fire spokesperson Mike Mohler.

When officials arrived, they found a 33-year-old woman dead from injuries she suffered after the projectile damaged the home, Mohler said.

One of the two men working on the cannon was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital. His injuries were unknown as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputies were heavily armed with assault rifles in an area where trailers and mobile homes were accessible only by a dirt road.

An ambulance was also called to the scene just north of the U.S.- Mexico border near Tecate.

(Reuters) - A man's homemade cannon killed his wife when the contraption suddenly went off early Tuesday and tore into the couple's home in the California border town of Potrero, authorities said.

The man had been drinking and was "freaking out" when emergency responders arrived at the home, said a dispatcher with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It was not clear what the man was doing with the cannon before his wife was killed, but authorities have suggested the death was accidental.

The woman killed by the cannon was 33 years old, said Cal Fire spokesman Captain Mike Mohler.

Authorities have not released the names of the woman or her husband.

There was a 4-year-old child at the home who was asleep and not injured in the blast, Mohler said.

One man at the home -- possibly the husband -- was taken to a local hospital for injuries, Mohler said. His condition was not immediately clear.

San Diego Sheriff's Department homicide investigators on Tuesday morning were at the scene of the cannon blast in Portrero, said Lieutenant Kelly Martinez, a spokesman for the agency. Potrero is just across the border from the Mexican town of Tecate and less than 40 miles southeast of San Diego.

Same thing happened to my son. Except he lived. It went through his neck. It was July 4th, and him, and the neighbor was messing around with it. Came withing an inch of killing him.
