Woman Intentionally Runs Over Dog
HARRIMAN (WATE) - A Roane County woman was arrested Monday, accused of intentionally running over her neighbor's dog with her car. Mary Runkles, 60, is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and was taken to the Roane County Detention Center. She has since been released on bond. The Roane County Sheriff's Office says a deputy was dispatched to a home on Cofer Circle on Tuesday, April 22 for a report of someone intentionally running over a dog. Bridgett Woodward said she was mowing her lawn when she noticed Runkles drive by her house at a high rate of speed. She said she and Runkles have had ongoing problems for several years, and that Runkles often speeds when going by Woodward's house. Woodward said she noticed Runkles speeding again and stopped to watch her. She says she then saw Runkles intentionally leave the roadway and swerve to strike "Boots," Woodward's daughter's 3-year-old chihuahua, who was on the grass in front of her neighbor's home. The dog later died at an emergency veterinary hospital. The deputy noticed a single tire track impression on the dirt leading up to the spot where the dog was found, as well as what looked like blood on a section of grass that lined up with the tire impression. The deputy spoke to Runkles, who denied striking the dog intentionally, saying she knew what it was like to run a dog over, having run over two dogs in the past. Runkles was then arrested the following Monday and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. Deputies said the evidence pointed to the incident being intentional.
