An 11-month-old boy who drank from a bottle of liquid given to him by a stranger is being treated in hospital.

Police say he is in a stable condition, but parents are being warned to be vigilant.

The baby was with his parents at McDonald's in Eltham, south east London, when a woman approached and gave him the bottle.

It is believed he drank the liquid and immediately vomited.

An ambulance was called and the baby was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich.

The Metropolitan Police alerted the public to the danger via Twitter.

In a message from @MPSGreenwich, police said: "WARNING! Last 1/2 hr. #Eltham High St. White female in 50s giving children in pushchairs bottles containing believed bleach."

Police later referred to the liquid as an "unknown substance".

It is thought the parents were eating at a table in the restaurant on Thursday lunchtime with the child in a pushchair next to them.

Officers have been at the scene gathering CCTV in a bid to trace the woman, who is described as heavily built with white hair and aged in her 50s.

At least one child was given one in Eltham High Street, south-east London, this afternoon.
There were also claims that the woman was seen outside a school in the town.
Police officers were deployed to the high street to search for the woman.
An ambulance was also sent to the scene.
The Met Police tweeted a warning which read: 'WARNING ! Last 1/2 hr. Eltham High St. White female in 50’s giving children in pushchairs bottles containing believed bleach.'
Police said it was too early to speculate as to a possible motive.
A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service said: 'We were called just before 12.40 today to reports of an incident in Eltham High Street, and sent one crew.
'Our staff treated a baby boy who had been taken unwell, who was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich.'

They dont.

She did it when the parents were either occupied or looking away. Dont say they're neglectful either as anything can happen in a split second when someone targets you.

Kids are like chimps remember, they grab anything.

The woman has been caught anyway.

I would never let a child in my care accept anything that wasn't wrapped or sealed from a stranger.

I always ask the parents before I offer a child something, except yesterday when one of the kids with my niece pushed a button for regular Pepsi since the water was out, or so they thought.

I gave it to a little boy, but, asked if he could have sugar first.

I remember when I was in elementary school when we could eat candy apples, homemade cookies or fresh plain apples from the old ladies, and even eat the candy without worrying about razor blades or poison on Halloween!
