Nope. Embalming is quite uncommon in England. We don't do open coffin/caskets here. You view the body soon after death at the 'Chapel of Rest' in a hospital or undertakers/funeral directors. Before the deceased looks or smells too rank, the coffin/casket lid is screwed down and the body is cremated or buried, after a funeral service. Even people who die with no money are given what used to be called a 'paupers funeral'. Staff from the funeral directors or local Council will be mourners, if the deceased has none. Crematoria and cemeteries are all owned and run by local Councils' and the church will bury you in a churchyard if you have paid for a plot. Non Christians are usually buried in a cemetery - many have areas especially for the Jewish, Moslem (etc) dead.

The whole embalming thing, I have always believed, was mostly about exploiting vulnerable grieving family members for more and more cash.

The same with too expensive coffins.

Essentially extorting the overwhelmed.

When my dad died I cremated. I don't get open caskets. Same price as cremation sure why not but when you go into embalming, presentation, body storage, a fancy box to rot in and a nice hole to put that fancy cedar box in and you're talking 10's of thousands.

I just don't see the point
