Six people have died, including two police officers, at a remote Queensland property after an ambush described as a “ruthless” and “cold-blooded” killing.

The officers and a neighbour were gunned down on Monday night and their alleged killers – a former school principal, his brother and sister-in-law – were later shot dead in a firefight with heavily armed tactical police.

The reason behind the initial shooting is still unknown. Here is what we know so far about what happened:

4.30pm Monday
Police officers were sent to a regional property on Wain Road at Wieambilla, about 300km west of Brisbane, as part of a search for missing New South Wales man Nathaniel Train, 46, from Dubbo.

Train had been reported missing on 4 December.

Train, his brother Gareth Train and Gareth’s wife Stacey have been identified as the alleged killers by senior police sources. They allegedly staged the ambush, gunning down the police officers as they entered the property.

Police constables Matthew Arnold, 26, and Rachel McCrow, 29, jumped a fence and were shot at as they walked up the driveway towards the house on the property.

The president of the Queensland police union, Ian Leavers, said the officers were met with “a hail of bullets” after they got over the fence.

“They did not know what was coming,” he told ABC radio. As a result of being shot they fell to the ground.

“These ruthless murderous people then went and executed the two police who were on the ground. They were executed in cold blood.”

Their two colleagues, constables Keeley Brough and Randall Kirk, both 28, took cover behind them. Kirk suffered a bullet graze while Brough managed to escape by hiding in the grass.

Brough and Kirk were later taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

During the ambush, the assailants lit a grass fire to try to flush the female officer out of hiding.

“They lit grass on fire to try and coax her out… which just shows the lack of compassion and the type of people they actually are,” Leavers said.

“She actually believed that she was either going to be shot or she was going to be burnt alive. She had come to terms with that was the end of her life.”

Neighbour Alan Dare, having either seen smoke or heard gunshots, came to check on what was happening and was shot. He died at the scene.

6pm
Police issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act, which closed off the nearby area and warned residents to stay inside.

Sixteen specialist police officers and PolAir, led by a local sergeant, arrived at the property and a siege commenced.

10.30pm
The two men and a woman were shot dead in a firefight with police, the force said.

“Two males and a female were fatally shot during a confrontation with police shortly after 10.30pm,” police said in a statement early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning
Commissioner Carroll said she had visited the scene and that the officers “didn’t stand a chance”.

They were all shot at in an area that had little to no cover, she said.

“The fact that two got out alive is a miracle,” she said. “To think [two] survived the scene, let alone … called for assistance, is just extraordinary.”

Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold were killed in the line of duty at Wieambilla in Queensland.


Constable Randall Kirk suffered a gunshot injury and was taken to hospital. Kirk has received surgery for his wounds, with shrapnel removed from his leg and side.

Constable Keely Brough escaped the scene but was also taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been released.

Arnold, 26, and McCrow, 29, died at the scene.

Police said Alan Dare, 58, was an innocent neighbour who was also killed.

The four officers had been following up on a missing person's report in New South Wales involving Nathaniel Train, a former school principal who was last seen in Dubbo in December last year.

Police confirmed about 2am local time that a further two men and a woman had been killed at the property in a confrontation with more officers shortly after 10.30pm.

There had been a siege and specialist officers and PolAir had been involved, police said.

Train, 46, and his brother, 47, were believed to be the men killed, along with a 45-year-old woman.

'They made the ultimate sacrifice'
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has offered his condolences to the loved ones of the two police officers and local man killed.

"Three lives cruelly cut short, this is indeed a devastating day for everyone who loved these Australians," Albanese said this afternoon.

"And our hearts go out to those in the grip of terrible grief.

"We know that this news has fallen hard on a close-knit and caring Queensland community.

"As well as, of course, the community to which all police officers belong.

Gareth Train exposed as online conspiracy theorist after Queensland police shooting



One of three suspects killed after executing two young police officers had previously ranted about his hatred for cops

Cop killer Gareth Train taunted police as “cowards” who nonetheless would “dance on your head,” in a disturbing rant from late last year.

Train was killed alongside his brother and partner after the brutal slayings of two police officers and a neighbour.

He has now been exposed as an online conspiracy theorist who hated cops and believed the Port Arthur massacre was a “false flag operation”.


It has since emerged that Gareth Train was a noted conspiracy theorist who regularly posted about his extreme views online.

An associate told The Guardian his descent into the world of conspiracy theories had been relatively recent, with Train claiming the 1996 Port Arthur massacre was a false flag operation to “disarm the Australian population”, and repeatedly claimed the government was running “re-education camps”.

“Re-education camps are located at the end of the line. Monitoring the rail system will ensure no escape. Dissenters will find themselves catching the long black train,” he bizarrely posted under a 2021 article about QLD Rail’s surveillance capabilities, adding “beware of the boogie monster”.

He also voiced about his dislike for authorities, including the Queensland Special Emergency Response Team, and appeared to support the doomsday prepper movement.


Train: Cops are ‘cowards’

In a disturbing post on Citizens Initiated Referendums, Train provided a chilling clue about the horror to come, writing about citizen’s rights and his hatred of authorities.

“I have directed law enforcement to leave my premises over the last 20yrs, having no reason or grounds and at times have also asked them to remove their hands from their weapons or pull their pistols and whistle Dixie,” he wrote.

“Fortunately for me they have all been cowards.

“Our country is at a point where even cowards are now dangerous because they are unpredictable in groups, turn your back and you may find yourself out cold on the floor with law enforcement dancing on your head. We are seeing this in Victoria.”

In a comment posted on alternative news site Michael Smith News in 2020, Train also shared his outlandish beliefs about the Port Arthur shooting.

“Did everyone forget we are all pawns (military or civilian) all expendable in the governments (sic) games. Has anyone been paying attention or care. Remember 1996 people. Anyone who wasn’t brain dead and watched the live media coverage at the time (1996 Port Arthur MSM) and was aware of the political deceit lead up, knows that this was a Government Psychological Operation to disarm the Australian population,” he wrote.

“Martin was the perfect patsy. The Australian government is guilty of mass murder, it’s not the first time and won’t be the last. Joint operation CIA, MI6, Mossad, ASIO and the Australian SASR.”

In separate comments posted on the CIRNow blog, Train shared his thoughts about former US President Donald Trump.

“Tr@mp is a ‘deal maker’ in his own words. The Clintons, Epstein, the 1%ers, deep state, CIA, Q …. are all his life long friends. I’m not questioning Tr@mps policies which have been good for the USA but his bedfellows,” he wrote in 2019.

“Don’t be fooled. For those who missed some of Tr@mps past media speeches, ‘I am the head of NWO’…. here is another ‘I won’t be waiting for the courts to remove firearms from mentally ill, I will be confiscating all firearms then it can be dealt with by the courts’. Who are ‘the mentally ill’?

“In the USA and Australia and the world over conspiracy theorists or those who question established authority are being declared mentally ill … Due diligence people, wake up from the global trance you are in, see past the game show, they all have the same end point totalitarian control.”

Police had arrived at the Queensland property on Monday afternoon amid concerns for Nathaniel Train’s welfare.

He was last seen in Dubbo in NSW on December 16, 2021, however, he had remained in contact with his family until Sunday October 9, 2022.

Nathaniel Train was a former school principal who officially left the NSW department of education’s employment in March this year, although he hadn’t worked at a school in the state since August 2021.

Before that time, he worked as a principal at a string of schools, including Yorkeys Knob State School, Walgett Community College Primary School and Innisfail East State School.

Meanwhile, Stacey Jane Train was listed as the Head of Curriculum at nearby Tara Shire State College as recently as 2019, and was also the representative of the Western Downs branch of the Queensland teachers union.

Nearby community in disbelief
A minute's silence was held in the nearby town of Tara this afternoon, where Arnold and McCrow were stationed.
Some residents left flowers outside of the police station, while others hugged and offered condolences to their colleagues.
Local resident Allan Bougoure said many people in the tight-knit town of 2000 knew the two police officers.



"That'll hit a lot of people really hard," Bougoure said.
One resident said the news of the deaths was completely unexpected.
"You don't expect those things to happen in your town or your family or anything like that," she said.
"I suppose we're a bit naïve but it has happened and it's very sad."



Another resident, who came to the police station to leave a bouquet of flowers, said she was saddened by the news.
"It hurts so much," she said.
"To hear the choppers flying around, the gunshots, and then to find out this morning six people have died, it's really sad."
Local leaders are working with the hospital and health service to organise counselling for residents who would like it.

As details continue to unfold surrounding the horrifying massacre of two police officers and a neighbour at a Wieambilla property on Monday, the nation is still left with so many questions.

It has now been alleged that brothers Nathaniel and Gareth Train were in a “love tryst” with Gareth's wife, Stacey.

Police are trying to piece together the bizarre dynamic between the “murderous trio” - including claims that they were engaged in a bizarre love triangle, and that Nathaniel may have been married to Stacey before she was with Gareth, The Australian reports.

Local residents to the rural Queensland area have also claimed that the Train brothers had been using methamphetamine and bragging about turning Gareth and Stacey’s two-bedroom home into a bunker.

The Daily Mailreported a close family member had told one local that the home had been moved off-grid, after the brothers installed solar panels, satellite dishes and rainwater and septic tanks.

“He said it had tunnels, fortified and barred doors and windows, guns everywhere and the boys [the Train brothers] had been taking ice lately,” a nearby resident, from the town of Tara, said.

Two officers were "executed in cold blood"
Two officers, Constable Rachel McCrow, 29, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 26, were "executed in cold blood" after arriving at the Wieambilla property for a routine missing persons call on Monday afternoon.

The killers stood over their wounded bodies and shot them at close range. Their service weapons and police radios were taken by the shooters to monitor police movements.

Two other officers, Constable Keeley Brough and Constable Randall Kirk, both 28, narrowly escaped the attack with Constable Brough fleeing into nearby bushland and becoming trapped as the shooters lit a fire in an attempt to smoke her out. Constable Kirk was shot in the leg and escaped in a police vehicle.

Alan Dare, a neighbour who came to inspect the fire, was gunned down by one of the shooters.

The three assailants, disgruntled former school principal Nathanial Train, who had been reported missing in country NSW, his brother Gareth, a reported conspiracy theorist who hated the police, and Gareth's wife Stacey, a former school teacher, were shot dead after a lengthy gun battle with the elite Special Emergency Response Team who arrived by helicopter.
