Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
I'm currently in an English Composition class and you'd be so amazed at how bad the average college student's grammar is when we proof-read papers. I see a lot of dumb asses put "no" instead of "know" and think it's correct. Never mind punctuation; your eyes will bleed before you finish reading one paragraph.

Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
Several of my college courses had an online portion where every week we would have to post answers for different questions. After we posted our answers we could see what the rest of the class posted. The spelling and grammatical errors were ridiculous. It was like 12 year old kids wrote it. How does someone get that far in life and not figure out that kind of thing, barring a mental or learning disability? |

Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
I have dumped guys over their texting etiquette. Either they text too often or they text with "chat speak". I understand in the days of 160 character limits, but nowadays, most phones just don't have that limitation. For me, getting a text full of "chat speak" will get you out of my life quicker than you can say "retard".

Look at it this way, not too long ago young college graduates were a threat to older workers as employers hired the lower paid grads to replace higher paid experienced workers. Now? Most employers I know stay away from recent grads like the plague. |

Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
Or perhaps those who want jobs but get blocked with the "sorry no experience" for a simple shitty job can read and write but cannot be bothered to jump through hoops?

Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
I found out from one of the mothers at my niece's school, the reason for not checking spelling and grammar is because the new principal's child cannot read or write. I do not know if the child has a disability or not. |

Re: Why Johnny Can't Write, and Why Employers Are Mad
There's an interesting book called 'The DUMBEST Generation' that suggests despite the information superhighway, despite a world of knowledge at their fingertips, the younger generation today is less informed, less literate, and more self-absorbed than any that has preceded it. But why? According to the author, an English professor at Emory University, there are plenty of reasons. Among them: - The immediacy and intimacy of social-networking sites have focused young people’s Internet use on themselves and their friends. The material they’re studying in school (such as the Civil War or The Great Gatsby) seems boring because it isn’t happening right this second and isn’t about them. - With a wealth of information as close as their smartphones or tablets, they don't feel the need to actually absorb or understand a subject, much less be able to engage in critical thought. - They’re using the Internet not as a learning tool but as a communications tool: instant messaging, e-mail, chat, blogs. And the language of Internet communication, with its peculiar spelling, grammar, and punctuation, actually encourages illiteracy by making it socially acceptable. It wouldn’t be going too far to call this book the Why Johnny Can’t Read for the digital age. It's an interesting and somewhat terrifying, but worthwhile read. · |
