White Bat Photographed On British Soil

A remarkable image of one of the world's most harrowing creatures - the White Bat has been captured on British soil.
Thought to be either an albino or leucistic - a condition which turns the animal pale due to a lack of pigmentation, it was spotted roaming the sky near Reading, Berkshire.
Despite losing its familiar night-time anonymity, the bat has been delighting local residents for three successive years.

Award winning wildlife photographer Doug Mackenzie finally managed to capture the shot of the flying mammal.
He said: 'The white bat has been visiting gardens for three years. It never stays long, maybe a week or two for ten minutes each night.
'This is the best shot I’ve managed of it over three years. I’ve never seen a white bat anywhere else and I doubt if I ever will again.
'It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever taken a photo of and I’m very pleased with the result.'
Mackenzie has since sent it to the Bat Conservation Trust who are trying to establish if it is an albino version of a pipistrelle or a less common Natterer’s bat.
The BCT’s initial guess is that it may be a ‘partial albino’ Natterer because the wings are still dark.
Either way, they agree that it is one of the most unusual bat sightings they have ever heard of in Britain.

Re: White Bat Photographed On British Soil

I used to work nights, and had them flying around me all the time, as I was a great bringer of bugs for the bats to eat. As long as they were flying around me, never had a bug bite me. Very handy little creature to have around, and would kick the ass of anyone who would hurt them!

Great picture!
