JUST HOURS AFTER a 8.9 magnitude earthquake stuck Japan, triggering a powerful tsunami that is expected to hit countries from the Philippines to Canada, a volcano has erupted in Indonesia.

One of Indonesia’s most active volcanos has spewed lava down the slopes of Mount Karangetang, and local authorities are still trying to evacuate residents, reports the Canadian Press.

The volcano is located on the Sulawesi island chain, on Siau.

Professor John Sweeney of NUI Maynooth, told TheJournal.ie that the volcano was not caused by the earthquake in Japan. “They are both on the Pacific Ring of Fire,” he said “but they are not linked other than that”.

The volcano last erupted in August of last year, killing four people.

Mount Karangetang volcano lies on the shoulder of the mountain in Siau, part of Indonesia's Sulawesi island chain.
