Two racers have tragically lost their lives after a first lap incident in the MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock race at Laguna Seca on Sunday.

MotoAmerica, which was supporting this weekend's World Superbike event, issued the following statement:

'A chain-reaction, multi-bike incident on the first lap of today's second MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has resulted in the deaths of two competitors.

'Bernat Martinez, of Alberic, Valencia, Spain, was transported from the raceway by ambulance to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was 35.

'Daniel Rivas Fernandez, of Moana Galicia, Spain, was transported by REACH Medical Air Services to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he also succumbed to injuries. He was 27.



'"I really don't have any words to describe what we all feel," said MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey. "First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers."

'"We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas," said Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams."'

Another rider has passed due to a road accident.


Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Yamalube/Westby Racing rider Dane Westby, who died yesterday in a streetbike accident in his hometown of Tulsa, OK.
Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., said, “All of us at Yamaha extend our most heartfelt condolences to Dane Westby’s father Tryg, mother Jane, and sister Scarlett. Dane was one of the most popular and beloved racers in our paddock. He had a whole army of loyal fans, and everyone who met him considered him a friend. He was a very talented motorcycle racer who brought a lot of racing success to the Yamaha and Yamalube brands.”

I've looked at this quite a few times and we really need a camera that was on the other side of the track,I just can't see what even started the chain of events that led up to the crash
