March 26, 2015, The red liquid that spurted from the walls and ceiling before pooling on the floor of a packed 99-B Line bus to UBC last week was hydraulic fluid.

In a video titled “Public Transit Horror Show: Translink, There will be Blood”, YouTube user Luka Banicevic likened the March 19 incident to a scene in The Shining, where an ocean of blood flows from elevator doors.

“A little bit of panic ensued in this packed bus behind me as you can hear from all the voices,” Banicevic wrote. “Bus might need an exorcism.”

Demonic possession, however, was ruled out by TransLink mechanics.

TransLink spokesperson Chris Bryan says the gushing red liquid, although quite reminiscent of the sea of plasma that splashed through the hallway of the Overlook Hotel, was actually just non flammable hydraulic fluid.

“No one was injured. The bus was safely parked and then towed back to the garage,” Bryan said.

“TransLink take all leaks very seriously. All incidents are promptly and thoroughly investigated.

Once repairs are made, our vehicles are road tested prior being returned to service.

After a two-hour repair, the 99 B-Line bus was back in service. The cause of the fluid leak is still being determined.”

TransLink says at no time were passengers in danger from the fluid, which, again, wasn’t blood at all.

“The bus has mechanical steering with power assist, so the safe steering of the bus was not impacted,” said Bryan.
