US Navy Buys Bogus Microchips from China
WASHINGTON, DC - Last year, the U.S. Navy bought 59,000 microchips for use in everything from missiles to transponders that turned out to be counterfeits from China. That according to a report in Business Insider.com Wired reports the chips weren't only low-quality fakes, they had been made with a "back-door" and could have been remotely shut down at any time. If left undiscovered the result could have rendered useless U.S. missiles and killed the signal from aircraft that tells everyone whether it's friend or foe. Apparently foreign chip makers are often better at making cheap microchips and U.S. defense contractors are loathe to pass up the better deal. The problem remains with these "trojan-horse" circuits that can be built into the chip and are almost impossible to detect -- especially without the original plans to compare them to. The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) is now looking for ways to check the chips to make sure they haven't been hacked in the production process. Expect to see a whole lot more funding directed to this goal. Or, considering IARPA is the research and development section of the intelligence community -- expect the money to be spent -- don't expect to see where. |

Dumbasses shud only buy high-tech military stuff from a U.S based company. British military from british companies etc., no matter if the price is higher. (quality is just more expensive)

So, they're going to continue to "save money" by buying chips from what is potentially the next enemy in a world war scenario, and dump hundreds of thousands of dollars into checking the chips for flaws. Beautiful.

chips have circuits ...logic gates....ie function...ie program at its most primitive level...ie can be hacked.

Yeah id only trust Britain/U.S and maybe Israeli technology. But heck America is so rich and advanced why the hell not just make your own? Damn money saving derps. |

because america has DUMBED DOWN its citizens by relaxing educational requirements in order to be politically correct instead of HELPING ALL people to move UP educationally, financially, and socially. NOW WE'RE A BUNCH OF BLITHERING IDIOTS compared to the rest of the civilised world. THE SKILLS AND TALENT are probably all in "third world countries", though I would rather stick to civilised world of UK, GERMANY, ISRAEL, FRANCE (maybe), SWEDEN. |
